Our first Communication feels like...

There’s something deeply humbling about the first time we communicate with an animal in a way we never have before. For many of us, the initial experience can feel like stepping into an entirely new world. It’s as though we are opening a door to a realm we never knew existed, and once we cross that threshold, everything we thought we knew about connection, empathy, and communication is called into question.

The first time we connect with an animal in a meaningful, conscious way, the experience can stir emotions, thoughts, and sensations that range from the unreal to the heavy. At that moment, we may feel overwhelmed by the profoundness of it all. For many of us, the communication feels surreal, as if it cannot possibly be happening. We may even wonder if we are imagining it or if it's simply a projection of our own wishes or emotions. But, as the communication deepens, we realize it’s real—and that is both exhilarating and a little frightening.

Unreal: The Awakened World of Connection

When we first tune into an animal's energy or thoughts, it’s not uncommon for it to feel utterly unreal. As humans, we’re taught that communication is a two-way street involving words, body language, and sometimes touch. But when we engage with an animal intuitively, the language shifts. There are no words—only a raw, unfiltered exchange of energy and emotion. This kind of communication doesn’t conform to the rules we’re accustomed to, and that can leave us in a state of awe.

We may receive images, impressions, or deep emotional sensations that are completely outside our normal experience. We might feel a sudden sense of warmth or peace from a pet who is miles away, or hear a voice in our mind that doesn’t quite sound like our own. At first, it’s difficult to trust. How can we know for sure that it’s real and not just a product of our imagination? That is the moment we enter the realm of “unreal”—a place where the boundaries between the physical and non-physical worlds blur. But over time, as we keep returning to this space, the unreality fades, and we realize that it’s just another dimension of existence we’ve never explored before.

Surreal: When the World Shifts

The surreal feeling often follows the initial shock of recognizing that the connection is real. Suddenly, we find ourselves questioning everything we once took for granted. It’s one thing to read about interspecies communication, to hear others tell their stories, but to experience it ourselves is a different matter altogether. We might feel like we’ve stepped into a dream. We begin to realize that the connection between us and animals is far deeper than we ever imagined.

Animals, in their own unique way, have always been speaking to us. Whether it’s the calming purr of a cat when we feel stressed, the wag of a dog’s tail when we’re down, or even the subtle shift in a horse’s energy when we approach, they’ve always tried to communicate with us. However, in the past, we may have missed those signals because we didn’t have the awareness or sensitivity to understand. Now, with our new perspective, we suddenly see the truth. Everything around us, even inanimate objects, is connected, and in that connection, communication is possible. It feels surreal to step into a world where that reality is not only real but vivid and accessible.

Scary: Facing Our Fears

And yet, as with all transformative experiences, there is an element of fear. The idea of communicating with animals, especially on a deeper, spiritual level, can be intimidating. It challenges everything we’ve known about ourselves and the world. If we’ve always believed that animals are simple creatures, it can be terrifying to confront the truth that they are deeply intuitive, intelligent, and capable of communicating on a level we have not yet understood. This new awareness may feel overwhelming, and we may even question our own sanity.

The fear often arises from our desire for control. We like to believe that we, as humans, are in charge of the world around us. When we start to understand that animals, too, have a voice and can share their wisdom, it challenges that sense of authority. The fear of the unknown—the fear of opening ourselves up to something beyond our control—can feel heavy. It’s a reminder that with true communication comes the responsibility to listen, to understand, and to honor what we are being shown. And that responsibility can feel heavy, even scary.

Nothing: The Empty Space

For some, the first attempt at communication may feel like nothing. We sit in silence, asking questions, hoping for a response, and… hear nothing. The emptiness in that moment can be deafening. It’s as if there’s a vacuum, a void where we expected to find answers. This silence may feel like rejection, or like we’re doing something wrong. But in truth, this nothingness is an essential part of the process. It’s a reminder that communication doesn’t always happen on our schedule.

Animals are sensitive beings who may need time to adjust to our energy and intentions. They might not respond immediately, or they may not communicate in the way we expect. Silence, in this context, is not an absence of communication—it’s an invitation to trust the process and to remain open, patient, and present. Over time, we come to understand that sometimes nothing is simply space—the space for understanding to grow, for boundaries to shift, and for our awareness to expand.

Heavy: The Weight of Deep Connection

Finally, with all this newfound understanding, we may feel the weight of the connection we have with the animal world. The profound bond that exists between all living beings is not to be taken lightly. When we truly connect with an animal, it’s not just about us or them—it’s about the entire web of life. This awareness can be heavy. It requires us to be mindful of the responsibility we carry as caretakers, guides, and protectors of the animals in our lives.

The depth of this connection can leave us emotionally and physically drained, as we begin to feel the weight of the emotions, thoughts, and experiences of the animals we communicate with. The realization that animals, too, have their own struggles, joys, and fears can feel like a burden, especially if we are particularly empathetic. Yet, this weight is not a burden we bear alone. It’s a collective responsibility that connects us all—the humans and animals, the seen and unseen, the physical and spiritual.

A Shared Journey

In the end, our first experience with animal communication is not just a one-time event. It is the beginning of a journey—one that will continue to unfold as we deepen our understanding of the silent, soulful language of animals. It is a journey that may be surreal, scary, heavy, or feel like nothing at all, but it is also a journey filled with beauty, insight, and love.

By embracing these initial feelings—whether they’re unreal, surreal, scary, nothing, or heavy—we can step fully into the richness of what it means to communicate with the animal kingdom. And as we do, we learn to listen more deeply, to love more fully, and to understand the profound bond that unites us all.
